During a financial year, a shopkeeper purchased goods worth Rs. 4, 15, 000 and paid a total tax of Rs. 38, 000. 

During the same financial year, he sold all the goods purchased as below:

i) Goods worth Rs. 50,000 at 5% tax.

ii) Goods worth Rs. 3, 20, 000 at 12% tax.

iii) Goods worth Rs. 45, 000 which are exempted from tax.


Calculate the tax liability (under VAT) for the financial year under consideration.

 If the rate of Sales Tax is 8%, find the sale price 

of the shoes.



Solution:
Sale price of shoes = Rs. 850
And,

Sales Tax = 6% of Rs. 850 = Rs. 51
Therefore,

The total amount paid by John
= Rs. 850 + Rs. 51

= Rs. 901     -Ans.

Finding the prime factors of a number



Example. Find the prime factors of 30.
30=10x3.  Here , 10 and 3 are factors of 30.
The number 10 can be written as a product of its factors as : 2 x 5. Thus, the prime factors of 30 are :
30 = 2 x 5 x 3. ( 2, 5, 3are prime numbers.)



Finding the prime factors of a number is the same as writing a number as a product of its prime factors. 


Tests of divisibility are useful in finding out prime factors.

If the rate of tax at each stage is 10%, 

what was the:


i) Sale price of the commodity 

for the manufacturer?



ii) The amount of VAT paid by the retailer?
